You might feel like you need to hide your body, or that you’re not good enough the way you are. But the truth is that you are perfect just as you are, and it’s time to start loving yourself unconditionally. It can be hard learning to love and accept your plus-size body, but I know we can do it!
As plus-size women, we often face societal pressure to conform to traditional beauty standards. When everywhere you turn this standard is shoved in our faces. It often leaves us discouraged from loving our bodies and feeling confident. Because every chance they get we are constantly being told our body is not good enough. Although, everybody is unique and is going through something different.
Our mental and emotional well-being takes a huge plummet because Somehow someway what a person looks like on the outside has become more important than what is on the inside. Today, we are breaking that cycle. Today, we are staring the haters in the face and giving them a big FUCK YOU!
It is time for us to forget what they say and love ourselves unconditionally because we know what goes on behind the photos posted to Instagram, and the videos on TikTok. We know that we are good people if they could just look beyond our weight. It is time for us to improve our confidence, embrace our bodies and put good/positive vibes out into the world because you never know who you are silently inspiring.
With all that being said let’s talk about loving yourself as a plus-size woman. Join me on this journey of learning to love and accept your plus-size body!
Society’s Beauty Standards are Harmful
The media and fashion industries have long perpetuated the idea that being thin is the only way to be beautiful and desirable. This narrow definition of beauty has led to body shaming and negative body image, especially for plus-size women. As a result, many plus-size women feel ashamed of their bodies and struggle to love themselves just the way they are. It is time to start living for ourselves and not how society tells us we should.
Breaking Free from Society’s Beauty Standards
It can be a difficult but liberating journey. Every part of you will constantly say stop it’s not worth it. Just go back to the whole you are used to hiding in. But having confidence is a vital aspect of our lives. It affects the way we view ourselves, the way we approach challenges, and the way we interact with others. Unfortunately, many of us struggle with self-confidence, which can hold us back from achieving our full potential. Confidence is key to embracing your body in public. Stand tall, make eye contact, and walk with purpose. People will take notice of your confidence and be more likely to accept and embrace your body, too.
Taking the plunge
The whole reason I wrote this blog post was that I bought my first bikini and took a picture of myself and was SCARED to post it. I held on to it for a few months until a few days when I posted it on Instagram and Facebook. The comments were overwhelmingly positive that they made me cry.
Taking that plunge and posting a photo where I feel the most vulnerable was TERRIFYING but it is something I needed to do for myself. So now I am throwing myself into the deep end of self-love and I want to build a community around all that self-love not just for plus-size women but for everyone who has felt out of place. I am just starting with plus-size women because… well I am one. The first step to this journey is accepting our body exactly the way it is.
Accepting Our Body
One of the most important things we can do to improve our confidence as plus-size women is to embrace our body shape. This means accepting and loving ourselves just the way we are, and recognizing that there is beauty in all body types. Try to focus on the things we like about our body, such as our curves, our smile, or our eyes, and work on building a positive self-image.
Embrace Our Unique Shape Embrace our individuality, unique qualities, and personality, and focus on what makes us special. Every person has a unique body shape that cannot be replicated. Embracing our body’s natural shape and curves can help us feel more confident and comfortable in our own skin. Instead of focusing on what society deems as “perfect,” focus on your body’s strengths and what makes you feel good.
Stop Comparing Ourselves to Others Comparing ourselves to others is a quick way to feel bad about our bodies. Remember that everyone’s body is different, and that’s okay. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on being the best version of yourself.
Focus on Our Physical and Mental Well-being While it’s important to love and accept our bodies just the way they are, it’s also important to focus on our health and wellness. With that being said Focus on health, not size: Rather than fixating on the number on the scale, focus on your overall health and well-being. Eat nutritious foods, stay active, and get enough sleep. By taking care of our physical and mental health, we can feel more confident and empowered, and we’ll be able to face the challenges of daily life. Our body’s health is more important than its appearance. When we feel good physically, we’ll feel better about ourselves and our bodies.
Celebrate Our Curves Our curves are what make us who we are. They are a part of what makes us attractive, feminine, and confident. Celebrate them and show them off proudly. Take the time to celebrate our bodies and all they can do. Whether it’s dancing, swimming, or simply taking a walk, find physical activities that bring us joy and help us appreciate our bodies.
Dress for our Body
Another way to boost our confidence is to dress for our body shape. This means finding clothes that fit well and flatter our curves. Look for clothes that accentuate our best features and make us feel comfortable and confident. Create a capsule wardrobe. Experiment with different styles and cuts to find what works best for us individually, and don’t let this scare us and cause us not to step outside our comfort zone and try something new. It is time you learn how to Accept Your Plus-size Body.
Find Clothes That Fit Wearing clothes that fit well can do wonders for our confidence. Don’t be afraid to try on different sizes and styles to find what works best for your body. Opt for clothes that flatter your shape, accentuate your curves, and make you feel comfortable. Choose clothing that flatters your figure and makes you feel good about yourself.
Experiment with Different Styles Different styles can highlight different aspects of our body. Trying different styles, colors, and patterns can be daunting but we have to find what we like and what makes us feel confident. We shouldn’t be afraid to take that leap out of our comfort zone and try new things. Whether it’s a bold pattern, a bright color, or a unique silhouette, find what makes us feel confident and beautiful.
Invest in Quality Pieces Investing in quality pieces that fit well and make us feel confident can have a big impact on our self-esteem. Don’t be afraid to splurge on a few key items that can make us feel great. Invest in high-quality, well-fitting clothing that flatters our figures and accentuates our best features. We shouldn’t try to hide our curves or make ourselves APPEAR smaller than we are, even though that is what we are used to. Embrace your body and show it off with confidence.
Dress for Ourselves Don’t dress to impress anyone else – We need to dress for ourselves. Find clothes that make us feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful. Embrace our bodies in all their forms: Whether you’re dressed up or dressed down, remember to love yourself and feel proud of who you are.
Surround Yourself with Positive People
I have said this before and I will say it again. We need to surround ourselves with positive, supportive people. It can help to improve our confidence as plus-size women. We need to start looking for friends who uplift and empower us, and who celebrate our bodies just the way they are. Avoid those who judge or criticize you. Avoid toxic relationships and people who bring us down, and focus on building a network of people who love and appreciate us for who we are. Find people who support and encourage us. This positive reinforcement will help boost our self-confidence and provide us with a support system when we need it.
Seek Out Positive Role Models Surrounding ourselves with positive role models can help boost our confidence. Seek out other plus-size women who inspire us, whether it’s through social media, blogs, Body Positive podcasts, or real-life interactions. Follow body-positive influencers on social media.
Find Supportive People Start Surrounding ourselves with people who support and uplift us is important for our self-esteem.
Create Distance from Negative People Negative people can bring us down and make us feel bad about ourselves. If we have people in our lives who constantly criticize our bodies or make negative comments, consider limiting our time with them or distancing ourselves completely.
Practice Self-Care
Positive self-talk is key to building self-confidence and improving our self-image. Make a conscious effort to speak kindly to ourselves, and to replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Remind ourselves of our strengths and achievements, and focus on the things that make us unique and special.
Treat Ourselves Kindly We need to be kind to ourselves and speak to ourselves the way we would speak to a good friend. How often are we showing ourselves love? Avoid negative self-talk and instead focus on our strengths and positive qualities. It’s important to be kind and forgiving to ourselves. We all make mistakes, and it’s important to remember that it’s okay. Start treating ourselves with the same kindness and compassion we would offer to a friend.
Indulge in Our Hobbies Doing things we enjoy can help boost our confidence and improve ourselves. It can also help us find like-minded people who accept us for who are and not what we look like.
Ditch the negativity: Reframe negative thoughts: When negative thoughts about our bodies arise, we have to start reframing them into positive affirmations. Focusing on our strengths and what we love about our bodies.
Practice Positive Self-Talk: Tell yourself that you are beautiful, worthy, and capable. The way we talk to ourselves has a big impact on our self-confidence. Start practicing positive self-talk, and be mindful of the language we use when speaking to ourselves. Changing our mindset can have a HUGE impact on how we see ourselves.
Embrace Our Imperfections: Embrace our imperfections and understand that they are what make you unique.
Focus on Our Strengths Instead of dwelling on our weaknesses, focus on our strengths. What are we good at? What do we love about ourselves? Take some time to reflect on your unique abilities and talents. Then, focus on these strengths and use them to build confidence in our abilities.
Focus on the present moment: Instead of fixating on our appearance, focus on the present moment and what we are doing.
Be confident: It is time to hold our heads up high and walk with confidence. Remember that we are beautiful and deserving of love and respect, regardless of our size.
