If you have been reading my blog for a while I am a very nostalgic person. For someone who does a lot of shadow work about her childhood… You would think I would be nostalgic for something that gave me so many issues. LOL, It wasn’t all bad. There are very special moments I hold dear to my heart because my sister made them so special. I think that’s why I loved October-January so much. It was a time when I felt like I was part of a real family. I can get into that more later, but for now, I want to share my favorite Halloween movies to watch growing up and that I still watch today!
Born in the 80s
Although I was born in the 80s and don’t remember much about those 5 years… One of my favorite Halloween movies was released in 1987. It was based on a book of the same name written by John Updike in 1984. I was not born yet in 84, but I was 2 in 87 and did not watch it till I was much older. The movie is The witches of Eastwick.
Movie Summary: Rotten Tomatos
Three small-town friends, Alexandra (Cher), Jane (Susan Sarandon), and Sukie (Michelle Pfeiffer), each having lost the man in their lives, are feeling unfulfilled — until a furtive stranger, Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson), arrives and begins courting each of them in turn. Eventually, Daryl tells them that they are witches. But as the three friends spend more time at his mansion, enjoying themselves and learning about their powers, they begin to worry about Daryl’s ultimate intentions.
Ahh the 90s
The ’90s was such a good time. The millennial generation came out with some of the coolest stuff. Not knocking any other generation, but I think mine was the best. LOL Anyways on to my favorite Halloween movies to watch growing up.
I bring up the 90s because a lot of my favorite Halloween movies came out in the 90s. Starting with The Witches in 1990. I did not watch it when I was 5 again I watched it when I was older, but absolutely loved it.
Movie Summary: Rotten Tomatos
While staying at a hotel in England with his grandmother, Helga (Mai Zetterling), young Luke (Jasen Fisher) inadvertently spies on a convention of witches. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) reveals a plan to turn all children into mice through a magical formula. When they find that Luke has overheard, the witches test the formula on him. Now, with the help of Helga and the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer (Rowan Atkinson), Luke the mouse must fight back against the witches.
1993 had my most favorite Halloween movies
1993 came out with some of the OG Classics that are still popular to this day even more than when they first came out.
Next on my favorite Halloween Movies list is Double Double Toil and Trouble. If you grew up in the 90s you saw Mary Kate and Ashley EVERYWHERE. Which was fine because I loved them. I loved them well into my 20s. Every time I watch this movie the Aunt always creeped me out… LOL
Movie Summary: Rotten Tomatos
On Halloween night, two precocious little girls try to save their parents from their nasty old capitalist aunt’s greedy clutches. Magic abounds and they meet mysterious new friends along the way.
It’s all just a bunch of hocus pocus…
If this movie is not on your favorite Halloween movies list… what is wrong with you???? JK, but seriously! Hocus Pocus has been and will always be on my favorite Halloween movies list.
Movie Summary: Rotten Tomatos
After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.
My skull’s so full, it’s tearing me apart.
The Nightmare Before Christmas –
Movie Summary: Rotten Tomatos
The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the “real world.” When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life — he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry.
98 was a good year
Before Harry Potter was a thing… Which I am also obsessed with. Marnie was living my dream of finding out from my grandmother and mother that we were witches from a place called Halloweentown. It was such a cute movie then and is still one of my favorite Halloween movies of all time.
Movie Summary: IMDB
When a young girl living with her good-witch grandmother learns she too is a witch, she must help her grandmother save Halloweentown from evil forces.
2000’s with the sequels of my favorite Halloween movies
3 years later in 2001, we are met with a sequel to Halloweentown. You are always worried when it comes to sequels if the second is going to be just as good as the first. I wouldn’t say it is as good, but still, a very cute movie and Debbie Reynolds is amazing as she always is. Halloweentown II is good enough to put on my list.
Movie Summary: IMDB
A young witch and her grandmother work together to foil the plans of a wicked warlock’s son before he can use powerful spells to create chaos in the world.
Another 3 years later in 2004, We watch Marnie go to High school. Now I am invested since there is a 3rd movie. I am going to watch it because I know these characters. I grew up with these characters. Aggie is now my grandmother! Not the best plots, but still worth a watch every year. They just become a classic after a certain point.
Movie Summary: IMDB
A girl in a magical world bets her family’s magic that nothing bad will happen when kids from Halloweentown attend high school in the mortal realm.
We return to Halloweentown in 2006, but It is not Kimberly J Brown… and if it is not her… I don’t want it. It is not Sara Paxton’s fault, but you don’t start a movie series and then change the lead actress in the 4th movie. It is said that Kimberly J. Brown, was filming Big Bad Wolf when Return to Halloweentown was scheduled to shoot, which brown expressed confusion and disappointment.
We all did Marnie… We all did!
It’s not my favorite and usually, I don’t watch it, but it needs to be added to this list. But here is what the movie is about anyways.
Movie Summary: Rotten Tomatos
An 18-year-old witch (Sara Paxton) must use magic to stop a devious plot to destroy Halloweentown.
