How to refresh and reset after being in a funk

I did have a completely different idea for a blog post this week, but something in me said I needed to write this. Got to love it when inspiration hits you when you least expect it. I say this at least once a week that I was in a funk or I am in a funk. Let’s talk about how to refresh and reset yourself after being in a funk.

refresh and reset

On a weekly basis, I get in my head. When I get it in my head it means I am overthinking things, questioning myself, my decisions… basically everything in existence. I am neurotic. I get in this funk and start to tell myself that I am not just not good enough and everything I am doing is worthless. Which is stupid… I know. But let’s talk about how to refresh & reset yourself after being in a funk.

It helps me… so I hope I can help someone else. It might not seem like much to others, but these really help me. So, some or all of these could possibly help you too. These are in no particular order. Just writing them out as they come to my head.

Take a shower

Nothing says refresh & reset than taking a shower. I don’t know about you, but if you put me in or near water I am instantly relaxed. I wash the bad thoughts that are putting me in this funk. I imagine once my head is under the water from the top of my head to little bitty toes all that negative juju is slowly going down the drain. Then when I wash my body I am scrubbing away all the stank that is making me feel icky and off my game. Down the drain, it goes. Not today Satan! Down with the bad thoughts.

Unplug yourself

If you follow me on Instagram or any of my social media you may notice I don’t post for days. Why? Because I like to unplug. Sometimes scrolling through social media can get overwhelming. Those pesky negative thoughts come creeping in and I have to stop it in its tracks.

Take time away from social media and enjoy the things you have in your life. It is very easy to get caught up in the hype of it all. So and so got a new bag, They bought a new house, and don’t get me started on the drama, drama, drama.

While unplugging I do things for myself. Things I know that I enjoy and 100% know will refresh and reset my mind. Will I still take a photo or video yeah, but I don’t jump on social media to post it. It is for my records… for now. When I decide to get back online I can choose to share or not.

Go workout

I have never been one to tell anyone to go workout, but lately I have been doing myself. I have been trying to get my steps up every day to 10k. I will have a post about that coming up in the next couple of weeks. As Elle Woods said “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.” Excuse the last part, but go with me on this. Were going to change it up… how about “exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people don’t think negative about themselves.”

Take your frustrations out during the workout. Get it all out with grunts and swear words. Fuck Yeah!! Beat your funk to a pulp while you whip your booty in shape. Honestly I wish I would have known that when I was younger because I would have exercised every time I was feeling down I would mad skinny by now. Sadly I am not, but this is definitely my go to now. Better late then never.

Go for a walk

I am lucky to live by a cute little lake that I can walk around everyday. I get to see birds, ducks, geese and turtles. I turn on a personal growth podcast and just walk. You don’t have to think about anything you just walk.

However, listening to those podcasts I always end up letting my mind wander and start thinking about Stephanie in the 2nd grade who said my dress was ugly. Or that time in Junior year of high school the boy I used to have a crush on was trying to flirt with and told me I had nice flapjacks. Me, My friend and his friend all laughed at him. His friend looked at him and said “Dude, you just told Michele she had nice pancakes. What kind of compliment is that?” He replied “Iwas talking about her boobs.”

I don’t know if that was suppose to be a compliment or an insult. He said he was trying to flirt, but what an odd thing to say. WHAT AN ODD THING TO REMEMBER???

Write it all down

I know I know I know I bring it up almost every single post. But I am telling you journaling everything out that you are thinking helps a lot more than you think. You can find out things that are bothering you that you didn’t know were. I have learned so much about myself and how my mind works. Hence why I can write this now and tell you what helps me get refreshed & reset myself.

When I was writing it all out in my journal during my funk I learned that I automatically go to I am not worthy. I think everyone is going to leave me and because I am unloveable and unworthy of being happy. With all the work I have doing on myself I know when I start thinking like that it is because I am

Bingewatch

Take a day and do absolutely nothing. binge watch shows you see on your FYP on TikTok. Since the panoramic (COVID-19) happened I find myself binging a lot of shows. I watched 5 seasons of The Crown, 15 seasons of Supernatural. Currently watching The Blacklist.

I was never one to binge watch shows it was never my thing. But I remember my first time like it was yesterday. I felt refresh and reset , but also beat myself up for a few days. It was when I watched all 9 seasons of How I met your Mother.

Mike was leaving for work at 9a and I brought the bedroom blanket/pillow and curled up on the couch. He said bye and left for the day. I laid there ALL DAMN DAY. He came home at 8p to me in the same position when he left that morning. Here is how our conversation went:

Mike: Have you been there all day?
Me: Yup…
Mike: Did you pee on the couch or did you get up for that kind of stuff.
Me: No I did not pee the couch. I got up for that and food/drinks.
Mike: Oh okay, cool. You deserve it. I was only asking because I was gonna say… I’m not cleaning the cushions.

Go for a drive

Out of everything on the list this one has to be my FAVORITE. I never have a destination in mind I turn on my Songs I grew up with playlist or my Hype Yourself up! Playlist. If I end up by water or on an empty road it makes the drive that much better. Driving just listening to my favorite songs that I can belt at the top of my lungs.

When I come back home I am ready to do the things I need to because I am refreshed and rest. If I need a reminder I put those same playlists on in my house and do a mini concert while I am working or cleaning the house.

Getaway

Mike and I were very lucky to take a much-needed getaway from Florida. Our last vacation was in 2018. We have been together for almost 9 years and never took a trip by ourselves. We took a week to go see my sister and nephews in South Carolina. The picture above is about 50 feet from where we camped in a tent at Ocean Lakes Family Campground.

This place had everything Water slides, outdoor pool, indoor pool, mini golf, an arcade, a nature center, their own general store, restaurant and so much more. Although we did not use 95% of the amenities (We just played mini golf) It was awesome to know it was there.

We slept in a tent on an air mattress and it made for some really good memories. We spent time with the family and also reconnected as a couple. Even if we didn’t leave the state just a few days getaway from our house would have made a huge difference. So take a little getaway to refresh and reset your mind.

Refresh and Reset

I hope these inspired you to take time for yourself so you can refresh and reset yourself. Life can get in the way sometimes and we put it on the back burner, but we need to take that time for ourselves. When we do that we can come back to our normal everyday lives with a clear head to do the things we would have spent overthinking and procrastinating.

Just take some time for yourself. It could be as simple as taking a walk around your neighborhood or saving up money to get out of your state for a bit. It can be as grand or as small as you would like it to be. We just need to refresh and reset every once in awhile for our mental health.

Until Next Time, Have a Great Day!

  1. Agree with you. We should take time to smell the flowers and feel the breeze of the morning air.

  2. Agree with you. Being able to spend some time with your spouse/partner will go a long way in facing another hectic day.

  3. Agree…take a shower are the best or you can over do it by taking a plunge on a pool..i prefer biking than walking..i prefer tending our pets rather than not doing anything..weekend for me is a family bonding so i leave behind my work on that day and spend it with them

    1. Yes, a shower is the cheap option, but if I can lay and just float in a body of water… uhhhh that sounds like heaven! Of course, I should have added to the listen cuddle your animals!

  4. I would say that you have suggested some great ways to get back into the groove and also rejuvenate oneself by the way one takes a break. I am totally in sync with the option for a drive, plugging off social media and of course immersing in a happy world

  5. Thanks and we do need to reset every once in a while and for me, a workout will do just that. Will try the others too! – Knycx Journeying

  6. I agree with every single thing on this list. Not that I adhere to all of them, but thanks for reminding me to make time for these things.

  7. slowing down is a good way to re assess and do a life audit. This isn’t bad, Charging our self is normal. making this as a practice will improve our relationship towards others 🙂

  8. These times are definitely challenging. And especially sensitive people who tend to overthink things have it really difficult in this isolation.

  9. Working out and walking do wonders for me when I’m too stressed or just overwhelmed. Excellent post, I really enjoyed!

  10. Great post! Taking a long walk and moving my body are great ways I get energy moving and instantly feel better.

  11. Writing is the best way to reset my day or week. I count all big or small wins. Reflect on the day. what did not work out and what can I do to make it better next time. this way I can a have a clean slate for the new week. Thanks for this beautiful post

  12. Writing really helps me relieve my stress and yeah working out and walking are also very good options for me.

    1. It depends on what I am doing the rest of the day. If I know I will be at my computer working. I will make sure I get up and go for a walk. If I am out and about walking a lot. I make sure to sit down and write it all out.

  13. Getting away, sleeping, and reading are my go-tos to refresh. Of course, my favorite place to get away to is the hot springs. I love soaking in hot baths!

  14. Spending some time with my husband helps get me in a better mood. I can just go hang out in my office and read — that works for me too!
